Navigating the Diabetes Odyssey

Welcome to my personal blog!

I’m Michael Donohoe, your blogger, curator, webmaster, and “sherpa” along the trail of diabetesodyssey.com. I am a 57-year-old husband, a father of five, with two stepchildren, and the part-time caretaker of Iris, our energetic four-year-old Border Collie (she is my buddy).

Since August of 1996, I’ve navigated life with Type 2 Diabetes, alongside other chronic conditions, complications, and complexities. This journey, which I often describe as an “odyssey,” inspired the name of this blog. This reflects the unpredictable zigs and zags, much like a “Crazy Ivan” from one of my favorite movies, “The Hunt for Red October,” in the grand maneuvers of life.

The blog started from the concept that “Diabetes Sucks!” was a thought that crossed my mind when envisioning this space, reflecting the raw and often challenging reality of living with this condition. However, I chose a path of ownership and proactive management (well, now proactive, but not so much in the past), aiming to excel in living with my health challenges where I can and inspire others to do the same. This blog is a platform for open, honest stories and conversations, embracing triumphs and difficulties, without “sugarcoating” the experiences.

I will share many personal stories, insights, and practical “hacks” from my life. The true heart of Diabetes Odyssey lies in fostering a global community. I aim to amplify the voices of others living with Diabetes, featuring their diverse stories, valuable tips, and perspectives from around the world, either here or on my other websites. Additionally, I will link to other sites that will offer helpful resources, verified links, product recommendations, and relevant news to support our collective journey.

Remember, as a wise friend often reminds me, “never quit!”

To me, that means staying on the trail if possible, recalculating when I get lost or end up in the wrong place, and being forgiving of myself. Additionally, our team will assist us in using the “trigmarks” along the way.

Your friend is living with diabetes.

Michael
