Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs. Being a huge baseball fan, this reference is key, as a curveball is spun, so the bottom drops out, causing the swing of the bat, and a strike against the batter.
For me, those curveballs came in the form of Type 2 diabetes, circulatory issues, the internal and external battles with mental health, and with the unwelcome companions – diabetes complications.
For many years, these experiences felt like a private struggle, a narrative I mainly kept to myself. In the past six years, I have come to share my story, not for sympathy, but for connection, understanding, and the hope of making someone else’s journey a lot less complicated and a little less lonely than my own.
My “why” is rooted in believing that vulnerability can be a powerful catalyst for change.
When I first received my diagnosis, I felt isolated and angry, thinking I was the only one grappling with such a complex array of health challenges.
See, T2D is my family’s primary disease.
This isolation was a heavy burden, hindering my ability to seek support and truly understand my conditions. By sharing my personal narrative, from the daily routines of managing blood sugar to the emotional toll of fluctuating health, I aim to demystify these conditions. I want to highlight the real, human experience, through my own, behind the clinical definitions, revealing how these interconnected health issues weave through the fabric of everyday life.
Every day, I find reasons to fight, push forward, and advocate for myself and others.
- I fight for my family – their love and support are the unwavering pillars that keep me striving for a healthier future.
- I fight for the moments of joy, for the ability to experience life fully, unburdened by the weight of untreated illness.
- I fight for knowledge, constantly learning about new treatments, research, and coping mechanisms, because informed decisions are empowering.
- I fight against the stigma surrounding both diabetes and mental health, believing that open conversation can break down barriers and foster a more compassionate world.
- Ultimately, I fight for hope, for the belief that even with chronic conditions, a fulfilling and vibrant life is not just possible but achievable.
With all its ups and downs, this journey has taught me resilience (perseverance, steadfastness, stubbornness), the profound importance of self-care, and the incredible strength found in community.
I hope that by opening up and sharing my personal odyssey, others will find a way to view their own experiences, a voice that echoes their struggles, and perhaps, a spark of inspiration to continue their fight.
Together, through shared stories and genuine connection, we can build a supportive network and relationships where no one feels alone in their health journey, creating a future where understanding and empathy prevail. ~msd
